The Holocaust survivors have a special place in our hearts. Over the years, we have had the privilege to visit several survivors in their homes and in various events planned by the Gates of Zion Messianic Synagogue in Odessa.
Many do not believe in G-d. They say, "He was not there for them during the Holocaust, and they surely do not need Him now". There are on a few hundred survivors remaining in Odessa. They receive a small pension. Unfortunately, for too many of them, they have to decide to either buy food or medicine. A fund has been set up to help these precious ones to live out their remaining years without having to make that choice.
A dedicated group of believers from Gates of Zion visits these survivors on a monthly basis helping them financially so that they buy medicine, etc. These survivors are reached out to in love and with each visit, more walls are broken down. Many have come to know Yeshua as their Messiah, Lord and Savior.
The Holocaust Memorial Association of Odessa has been very successful in keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive so that the atrocities are not repeated again.
A Holocaust Memorial Park has been established that includes trees planted in honor of the "righteous gentiles" that helped protect Jews during the war. Several monuments have also been placed in various key places in Odessa.
The most recent project is a Holocaust Museum. Artifacts from all over the region have been collected and are on display. A miniature replica of the concentration camp in the Odessa region is also on display. The majority of the Jews in these camps were murdered when the bunk buildings were set on fire trapping everyone inside towards the end of WWII.
